Companies turn to social networks.
Microsoft is looking for Paul Leathers, a United States Microsoft employee and his partner Kristen, who are believed to be in Canterbury.
Mr Leathers and his partner were here on vacation, and Mr Leathers is registered with the local Red Cross and the US Embassy.
Microsoft is working with these organizations to contact the pair.
Telecom is also looking to make contact with three remaining staff from a roll of about 1600, group corporate communications manager Katherine Murphy said this afternoon.
All staff working in buildings in Christchurch have been accounted for, she said, and the company was not “disproportionately worried” about the remaining three.
“We just want to make sure they’re okay.” She said people’s first point of call in an emergency is not usually their employer.
Other telcos TelstraClear, 2degrees and Vodafone have reported all their staff are safe and accounted for.
