Toby Talbot is returning to New Zealand to join Assignment Group as managing partner.

Mr Talbot is best known for his turnaround of DDB Auckland back in 2011 but later moved to London to work with RKCR Y&R.

After months of speculation over whether he would return, Mr Talbot took the helm of Whybin\TBWA’s creative team, replacing creatives David Walden and Andy Blood.

When he arrived, several DDB creatives jumped ship to Whybin as he rebuilt the agency. However, he spent only 14 months at Whybin before crossing the ditch to join DDB Sydney as chief creative officer.

DDB Group Australia and New Zealand chairman Marty O’Halloran says the network is disappointed to lose Mr Talbot.

“I have personally worked with him for nearly 10 years across two agencies. He has unquestionably done a brilliant job in Sydney and leaves behind a very strong creative department,” he says.

Mr Talbot says in a statement it was a hard decision to leave.

“I’ve been commuting between Sydney and Auckland every week for nearly two years now. As much as I’ll miss my friends at DDB Sydney, I am more than ready to swap a Boeing 737 for the Devonport ferry.”

DDB Sydney’s clients include McDonald’s, Westpac, Volkswagen and Wrigley’s.

Mr Talbot’s replacement will be announced in several weeks.
