TomTom supersizes iPhone sat-nav app for iPad
Just the ticket for those who want a big, big screen in their car.
TomTom has updated iPhone GPS mapping app with a new version that's optimised for iPad.
When run on an iPad, TomTom iPhone App for iPhone Version 9 offers higher resolution images and new interface features. A full-screen display shows both driving view and advanced lane guidance at the same time.
The new version also refreshes maps with updated roads and "more accurate information about fixed speed camera locations."
The updated version is available now as a free download for those who already own the software. Otherwise it costs $94.99. Optional real-time traffic updates cost $9.99 per month (via an in-app purchase), or $49.99 for a one-year subscription.
Some may have visions of replicating the popular YouTube clip in which a driver velcros an iPad to his dashboard for a jumbo GPS screen.
But life isn't quite so freewheeling on the licensing front.
"Once you have the App it can be used on the iPhone and the iPad without having to purchase a second App," a spokeswoman for TomTom told NBR.
The basic app can be used on iPhone and iPad at the same time.
However, if you want to use live traffic updates on both devices at once, you need to purchase a second subsciption to the premium service.
Real-time traffic updates are provided via the AA's Geosmart unit.
