The Chilean ash cloud blighted the tourism industry in June, according to figures released this morning by Statistics New Zealand.
Short term visitors fell by 14,600 to 131,300 in June, a fall Statistics New Zealand attributes largely to the ash cloud from volcanic eruptions in Chile which cause a large number of flight cancellations both in and out of the country.
The flight cancellations began on 12 June and before that visitor numbers were up by 2,800 on the previous June.
Long term migration numbers are still running negative, as they have since the February earthquake in Christchurch.
There was a net outflow of 300 migrants in June, with the main contribution being 1000 New Zealanders leaving to Australia.
