Former Trade Me head of development Alan Howard is the chief technical officer of OpenBorder, an online marketplace for global translation.

Chief executive of the Wellington-based start-up Jamie Kruger said in a press release that the global translation market was forecasted to climb to more than $US39 billion by 2014.

OpenBorder.com planned to revolutionise this when it launched in August, the release said, by providing a business to business marketplace for buyers and providers of professional translation services.

The website’s interface would be multilingual, and Mr Kruger said the company would be the world’s first global translation broker.

“The digital platform that Alan and his team have developed allows trade across time zones, countries, languages and currencies, generating income 24 hours a day.”

Mr Howard founded ImpelHR, a web-based recruitment and candidate management system before joining Trade Me in 2004.  Trade Me was sold to Fairfax Media in 2006 for $750 million.

Open Border was the brainchild of linguist and majority shareholder Dr Paul Sulzberger, the release said, whose doctorate found that frequent exposure to a language’s sound patterns was the best way to learn it.
