The Treasury’s deputy chief executive and chief operating officer, Vicky Robertson, has been appointed chief executive of the Environment Ministry.

The ministry is the government’s primary adviser on laws, regulations and policies and sets this country’s framework for environmental management.

Ms Robertson has been appointed for a five-year term from June 2: Mark Sowden will stay on as acting chief executive until then.

According to a statement from the State Services Commission, Ms Robertson has extensive experience across a range of complex policy frameworks, which includes as the Treasury’s representative on the Land and Water Forum and leading an inter-departmental group on the review of climate change policy.

"I am very pleased to appoint Vicky Roberston to this important role, which is vital to the management of New Zealand’s environment and natural resources," state services commissioner Iain Rennie said.

In 2010, Ms Robertson was seconded to the United Nations Development Programme in New York, where she led a strategic and structural review of the organisation.

She has a law degree and a certificate in legal studies from Victoria University of Wellington and is a former New Zealand hockey representative (1989-1997).

“Ms Robertson has a real focus on results and works very effectively with other government agencies, iwi, NGOs and the private sector,” Mr Rennie said in the statement.

He said Ms Robertson’s experience working closely and effectively with a wide range of organisations and stakeholders will serve the ministry well in its national, regional and community-based environmental work.
