The title track of TV3 series The GC - Vibrations, sung by cast member and Australian X-Factor contestant Jade Louise and featuring rapper Savage - has gone to number 1 on iTunes NZ, beating the likes of Katy Perry, Chris Brown, Coldplay and Rihanna, and several acts NBR has never heard of.
Jade Louise can be thankful that The GC's producers departed from their original "Golden Mozzies" pitch to NZ On Air supported the reality series with a $419,408 grant.
The struggle street families and small business people of the Gold Mozzies pitch were almost all dumped before filming (Tame Noema being the sole survivor).
Julie Christie's production company substituted a younger, more commercial cast that included the X Factor contestant.
TV3 broadcaster MediaWorks has used the occasion of the number one song to reiterate that The GC achieved a respectable average 5+ audience of 333,400 (all 5+).
On-demand viewing added 147,072 views of the first episode, and as at June 21, the show had averaged 49,747 views through TV3's website.
The GC attracted a strong Maori viewership, MediaWorks says, with an average 5+ of 92,600 tuning each week.
But despite the good numbers, the controversy-hit NZ on Air has been shy on whether it will commit funding for a second series.
