After looking across the Tasman for its past two appointments to the role, TVNZ has promoted internally to find its new head of news and current affairs.

John Gillespie will take up the role on June 24.

The West Aucklander has been with TVNZ for 16 years in a variety of roles, including a producer of Breakfast and his current position as editor of daily programmes.

Mr Gillespie was born in Greymouth and raised in Christchurch.

He studied journalism at Australia’s Charles Sturt University (formerly Mitchell College).

Before joining TVNZ, he worked for five years at Canterbury Television as a reporter and later as news editor.

Mr Gillespie replaces Australian Ross Dagan, who quit on January 15, shortly before the launch of Seven Sharp. Mr Dagan, who had been with the state broadcasteer for less than a year, returned to the Seven Network.
