Twitter is going for gold - or at least a little revenue - with a website that will collect tweets from Olympics athletes, plus personalities from US broadcaster NBC.com.
The social network told The Wall Street Journal it would receive no money from NBC, but it has sold ads on its Olympics site to GE, Procter and Gamble and other advertisers.
Twitter claims around 140 million users, but a study quoted by the Journal says it will generate just $US260 million revenue this year compared to Facebook's $US311 milllion for 2011.
Twitter's Olympics website will go live wiht the opening ceremony in London, Friday night UK time (Saturday 8am NZ time).
