Twitter plans to add photo filters in a bid to compete against Instagram, according to a New York Times report.

The social network has made no official comment.

Facebook bought Instagram (then with 30 million users) in a $US1 billion cash and shares deal on April 9 (which eventually closed for $US715 million after Facebook's IPO went south).

Twitter has since inked a deal with photo-sharing service Photobucket, but started storing photos on its own servers too.

A Twitter employee told the Times that Twitter is also assessing whether to add the ability to upload and possibly edit videos without having to go through a third-party application or service like YouTube.
