The United States Justice Department is suing BP over this year's oil spill in an effort to recover billions of dollars, international news agencies report.
The suit, filed in New Orleans, is asking for BP to be held liable for all removal costs and damages from the spill, as well as civil penalties.
An explosion that killed 11 workers at BP's Macondo well in April led to oil spewing from the company's undersea well.
The other defendants in the case are Anadarko Exploration & Production LP and Anadarko Petroleum Corp.; MOEX Offshore 2007; Triton Asset Leasing GMBH; Transocean Holdings and Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling and Transocean Deepwater; and BP's insurer, QBE Underwriting ./Lloyd's Syndicate 1036.
The suit alleges safety and operating regulations were violated in the period leading up to the explosion and subsequent spill on April 20.
