Villa Maria’s national wineries manager bagged the Sustainability Champion Award at the NZ Sustainable Business Network Awards last night.

Fabian Yukich has been driving sustainability at Villa Maria for more than 12 years embedding social, environmental and financial sustainability into the core of the company, which was founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich.

Under Mr Yukich’s management Villa Maria becoming the first major NZ wine producer to pocket CEMARS (Certified Emissions Management and Reduction Scheme) certification and BioGro Organic certification from the vineyard to the winery.

It has also recently introduced Toyota Prius Hybrid vehicles to its national sales fleet.

“One thing I am certain about is that sustainability is a journey and we need to keep searching for ways to do things better,” said Mr Yukich.

The award acknowledges key people or teams who have been “sustainability superstars” within their organisation.
