Beleaguered Kiwi jetpack-maker Martin Aircraft has some competition: the Kitty Hawk Flyer, made by a startup backed by Google co-founder Larry Page.
Mr Page (ranked by Forbes as the world's 12th richest person with a wealth of $US42 billion), has plans to sell the Kitty Hawk by the end of the year.
The "flying car" has yet to get a price tag, but the Google co-founder is already offering a $US2000 discount for those who register their interest now.
Will it succeed, or go the way of Alan Gibbs' Aquada, the Segway, the Martin Jetpack and other cool gadgets that have stumbled in the face of regulatory and insurance hassles, and the struggle to find a market outside super-rich hobbyists?
