UPDATE: Vodafone head of corporate communications offered the following update at 12.30pm:
"A connection between two data centres failed – this knocked out our email (both POP and webmail) and our hosted websites.
"Engineers have put in place a workaround to get the data centres back up and running and they’re now clearing the backlog of email – customers should see email start to flow again but it will take the afternoon to catch up.
"Vodafone would like to apologise to our customers – we know the email service has not been working as well as any of us would like over the past few weeks.
" We are building a new storage solution that will come on line in the next two weeks that should alleviate the ongoing problem. Today’s outage is unrelated to that issue."
Angry Vodafone customers have vented their annoyance on Twitter this morning as the telco's email service suffers more problems.
Head of corporate communications Paul Brislen told NBR that all Vodafone customers were without email service this morning.
"Our email service has experienced a number of issues over the past few weeks. Unfortunately this has meant customers are intermittently unable to send and receive email, or have experienced email delays."
The outage began early this morning. There is no estimated time to get service back online lines. "The ETA is ASAP," said Mr Brislen.
The problem relates to Vodafone's storage area network, or SAN, which handles email storage. [Or not - see UPDATE above]
"We have a project in place to provide a number of improvements. The biggest impact will be seen in the next two weeks when we increase our storage capacity for email. At this point we expect to see an increased level of reliability for the email service," said Mr Brislen.
