UPDATE / Feb 11: A spokeswoman for Vodafone NZ told NBR ONLINE: "We are aware of reports of issues with iOS 6.1 on the iPhone 4S. We have no indication at this point of problems for customers in New Zealand but will continue to monitor developments closely."

-------------------

Feb 10: Vodafone's UK operation has warned its customers against upgrade to iOS 6, The Wall Street Journal's All Things D blog notes.

iOS is the software that runs Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The latest free upgrade, iOS 6.1,

A warning on Vodafone's UK website reads:

We’re aware of an issue caused by Apple iPhone 4s handsets that have been upgraded to iOS 6.1 which impacts performance on 3G.

Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.

While Apple’s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4s should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed.

The carrier has also txted customers, asking them to "hold off" on the upgrade (see example pictured above).

Vodafone NZ did not immediately respond to a query about whether the warning was applicable here.

iOS 6.1's headline features - wider support for LTE or 4G fast mobile connections, plus the ability to buy movie tickets via the Siri voice assistant - are not applicable to NZ. There is one universal tweak: iTunes Match subscribers can now download individual songs from iCloud.

Version 6.1 also makes it easier to find the option to limit Ad Tracking - or how much information advertisers can collect about you as you use your iPhone (already limited to general, anonymous information rather than unique identifiers; see Ars Technica explanation here).
