The Overseas Investment Office has approved the $2.6 million deal in which Waiheke Air Services (owned by Denis Brian Musson) has sold the airport to a private UK trust.
The OIO says while the deal is sensitive as the Waiheke Island airfield is the only airfield on the island that is available for commercial and private operations and is also used by emergency services – it is satisfied the purchaser will maintain and improve the airfield to service the greater Hauraki Gulf area and Auckland.
The OIO says the purchaser - Waiheke Island Airpark Resort Limited as Trustee of theUK's Neil Greer Developments Trust - plans to develop the airfield by sealing the runway, constructing hangars, airfield facilities and 26 visitor accommodation units (as approved by an existing resource consent).
