Watercare's watery sale case, Auckland law school changes course, property crowdfunder gears up

A sneak peak at today's NBR Print Edition.

Fri, 16 Jun 2017

In NBR Print today: There’s no mystery to why the thought of selling Auckland’s Watercare prompts widespread salivating, writes Tim Hunter. But the arguments advanced in favour of flicking it off to the private sector – most recently made by Infrastructure NZ – are thin gruel indeed.

Investors have had plenty to absorb over the past week as voters in major democracies continue to throw up surprises. Nevil Gibson takes in the market reactions to political events affecting three of Europe’s largest economies.

The country’s first property equity crowdfunding platform is attempting to get up and running within eight weeks. Calida Smylie casts her eye over FulQrum, which was founded by civil engineer Ziahad Mohammed and has Icehouse chief executive Andrew Hamilton and economist Shamubeel Eaqub as advisers.

Auckland University appears to be backtracking on plans to increase the number of law students next year. NBR has obtained the minutes of an April law faculty meeting, which reveal law school dean Professor Andrew Stockley had "several conversations" with vice-chancellor Dr Stuart McCutcheon, who was "at this stage minded to agree to a year's pause before considering if there will be any increase in student numbers." Jason Walls reports.

NBR's investigation this week of the state of capital markets shows widespread disaffection with the NZX and its ability to perform its role of providing investment opportunities for all New Zealanders. Duncan Bridgeman wraps up his online series with a print feature.

Shoeshine’s been thinking about high flyers and Andrew McKenzie most certainly qualifies as one. Now chief executive of Housing NZ, Mr McKenzie was Fletcher Building’s finance general manager of the construction division. Shoeshine talks to him about what happened just before he left Fletcher in September last year.
