Defence Minister Wayne Mapp announced today he would not stand for re-election next year.

The North Shore MP said he was leaving politics for personal and family reasons.

The electorate is a blue ribbon National seat.

Mr Mapp's stint as Science Research and Technology Minister has seen the merger of MoRST and FoRST, and the establishment of an $189.5 million R&D fund.

Last week, the first $90 million in co-funding was dished out, with companies including Endance, Orion Healthcare, Weta Digital and Tait Electronics picking up $7.2 million grants.

13th ranked in cabinet, Mr Mapp is also Defence Minister, and Associate Minister for Economic Development, and Associate Minister for Tertiary Education.
