Wellington Airport is closely watching reports relating to liquefaction following the Christchurch earthquake because a significant part of it is on reclaimed land.

Part owner Infratil made the observation in its latest monthly update.

"Reports from Christchurch relating to liquefaction will be especially closely reviewed for relevance," Infratil said. The airport was interested in the damage liquefaction caused and the remediation steps required.

International scientists arrived in Christchurch to study liquefaction after the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on September 4. Pressure from the earthquake caused silty, softer soils to compress, forcing out surrounding water particles and turning the soil from a solid to a liquid.

The suburbs most damaged by liquefaction were Avonside, Bexley, Brooklands, Dallington, Halswell and Kaiapoi .

Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast has asked for a report on liquefaction.

Wellington Airport is 66 percent owned by Infratil and 34 percent owned by Wellington City Council.

Total passenger numbers rose 2 percent in August from the same month last year.

Domestic trunk services had 1 percent less patronage, regional services were up 8 percent and international services were up 5 percent.
