A power failure at KiwiRail's national train control centre in Wellington has halted Auckland's trains.
KiwiRail spokeswoman Jenni Austin says the problem is temporary, but given the time of day there will inevitably be disruption to the city's peak services.
Auckland Transport and train operator Veolia Transport are yet to make a statement, but it is understood they will advise people to take buses or make other arrangements.
Buses are expected to be busy tonight and there may be delays.
Ms Austin says the power problem means the company's train controllers have no radio communications to Auckland.
"They don't know what's caused the outage. Obviously, they're working on it and as of the moment they're getting that power back progressively."
Auckland Transport's MAXX website says: "Due to a major power outage, all train services in the Auckland region are currently suspended."
