Australian shopping mall owner Westfield is welcoming Auckland Council's decision to approve a plan change for the rezoning of its St Lukes land holdings.
Westfield wants to increase the mall's indoor floor space to 9.2ha, from 4.5ha, making the mall larger than the 7ha Sylvia Park shopping centre in Mt Wellington and Westfield Albany, which is also around 7ha, nzherald.co.nz reported.
The mall extension is controversial because of its suburban location.
Westfield Director Justin Lynch said the plan change was merely a very first step in future planning for the use of Westfield's landholdings at St Lukes.
"At this stage there is no time frame for the commencement of any development works at the centre. Any future development at the centre will require resource consent for any specific plans," he said.
The proposed plan change was publicly notified in April this year and a two week public hearing was held in June.
