Westpac has apologised after a glitch meant about 10,000 government workers didn't get paid today.

The 10,000 public servants include those in the health sector and the police.

The bank has put out a statement apologising for the glitch and assuring affected customers they will not be penalised for late payments that result from it.

"Westpac can confirm we are investigating an issue that has resulted in a number of payments not being processed overnight, which include a number of salary payments.

"We believe approximately ten thousand payments have been impacted.

"Westpac wants to assure all those affected that no one will be penalised. All payments will have been processed by the end of today with many being processed by early afternoon.

"Westpac apologises for the undoubted inconvenience this will have caused, and is well aware of the severity of the issue. We are doing everything possible to rectify the situation."
