How much is a telecommunications company operations manager worth?

The job: operations manager for a small telecommunications company, overseeing a 4-person systems administration team, overseeing related technologies and advising management on infrastructure decisions and direction

The profile: In addition to a Bachelor of Science specialising in computer science, 8 years of experience with Windows infrastructure, including server, database, print, and network troubleshooting, 2 years of managerial experience, and a good understanding of virtualization and the cloud

The salary: Between $110,000 to $125,000.  Wellington-based Beyond Services general manager Ben Pearson said IT skills were especially in demand in Wellington, “to the point where we cannot fill all our vacancies quick enough”. In terms of sectors within IT, Mr Pearson said there was an acute demand in software development, computer systems-oriented business analysts and systems development project management, as well as systems infrastructure. But he said IT management roles were in much shorter supply.

The upgrade:The above salary range relates to the management and technical leadership of a relatively small team. Because of this, Mr Pearson suggested the best avenue for salary growth would be to seek larger scale IT leadership roles, notwithstanding comments above regarding the relative shortage of such opportunities. He said a move to a similar role in a larger organisation (where such opportunities were more likely to appear) would be a reasonable strategy.
