The job: corporate communications manager for a large-scale corporation, managing a team of 8 and an external PR consultancy; responsible for developing and implementing corporate communications, risk management, and social strategies; required to liase with offshore communications and local senior management

The profile: In addition to a bachelor’s degree in communications studies, 4 years as an accounts manager at a PR agency, 3 years spent in local government communications, and 5 years in media relations at a telecommunications firm; experience with a range of social media and social media campaigns

The salary: Salary in the range of $120,000 to $150,000 with bonus and package on top. Gaulter Russell managing consultant Robert Walker said salaries at this level depended on the industry sector, with clear disparities between certain industries and private vs the public sector.

The upgrade: Mr Walker said a proven track record across several different industries was likely to enhance market value. But due to the size of the corporate market in New Zealand, there were only a finite number of roles at this level and very little movement at the senior end of the market.

When it came to education, he said a relevant degree was clearly viewed as a positive when it comes to initial selection criteria, particularly at more junior levels. “At this level of seniority however I think the relevance of the degree pales into significance when held against core communications and/or journalism experience.”
