The job: National sales manager for a health tech company, responsible for implementing sales and marketing strategies across New Zealand. Regularly liases with sales teams across the country, manages key national customers, and the marketing and operations teams. Various financial responsibilities including regular monitoring and reporting on budget and performance.
The profile: 7 years experience in sales and marketing in retail: specifically general insurance, health insurance and health supplement product. A business degree majoring in marketing.
The salary: Depending on the sector, from $140,000 to $170,000 (plus company car, benefits, and bonus)
The upgrade: "Once you get to this level in sales ideally you would be looking to expand your general business knowledge by post-grad qualifications in your sector or across the generic business," said NBR Talent commercial manager Jonathan Lockyer .
Mr Lockyer said there was not a high demand for senior-level sales manager roles in the current economic conditions. Most of the global corporates had taken the role of national sales manager back to either their Australian or Asia-Pacific head office. New Zealand was being run as though it was another state of Australia, or even as a territory of New South Wales, with a New Zealand sales manager or country manager to execute sales strategies passed down from the head office.
"With New Zealand corporates this role does exist but not with the mid-tier companies, who normally have a sales manager reporting into the general manager or country manager, purely focusing on the sales."
He said for those interested in pursuing a career as a sales manager, the path to filling that role in a specific sector is normally a degree in the sector area, followed by a career in sales and marketing. But a business/marketing degree with a career focused in one sector would also suffice.
