White House officials talk down trade, raise shutdown costs

The commerce secretary says a China deal is 'miles away' while the shutdown is hurting the economy.

Stocks on Wall Street retreated then recovered after a top administration official hosed down progress in the US-China trade negotiations. 

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in an interview with CNBC that the US was “miles and miles” from a deal.
