What Independent MP Hone Harawira's proposed new political party might be called has received a wide variety of interest -- from those supporting the party, and those vehemently opposed to it.
Mr Harawira last month held a series of meetings nationwide to gather support, and yesterday told NZPA he would be making an announcement on April 30.
An online competition to choose the name of his party began on Mr Harawira's website today, with a list of suggestions -- Tino Rangatiratanga, Mokopuna and Mana among them -- and a section for viewers to give their opinions.
As well as endorsements for several suggested names, a number chipped with in less serious suggestions.
Among those were: "The Mad Hatter Party because only crazy people will really join", "The Huge chip on my shoulder Party" and "The I'm-Sorry-For-The-Words-I-Used-But-Not-The-Sentiment Party?".
Many of the suggestions referenced Mr Harawira's comments about "white mofos" in an email defending his trip to Paris while on a parliamentary visit to Europe.
They included "It Definitely Ain't Whiteboy Day party?" and "Let's divide NZ party".
The competition has sparked similar conversation threads on other blogs and websites.
Mr Harawira quit the Maori Party in February before its national council ruled on a disciplinary committee recommendation to expel him.
The recommendation was the result of a complaint laid against him by caucus colleague, Te Ururoa Flavell, over Mr Harawira's outspoken criticism of the party's relationship with the Government and accusations it was supporting anti-Maori policies.
