Oct 4: The three-month old infant and her 36 year-old mother who died after falling several floors from a high-rise apartment block in Auckland City yesterday evening were Mexican and had arrived in New Zealand midway through last month, police said this afternoon.
The woman's husband and the baby's father is now in Auckland having travelled by plane from elsewhere in New Zealand this morning. He is being supported by Auckland-based Mexican Consulate staff. The family had come to New Zealand on business.
Post-mortem examinations of the deceased are still in progress and formal identifications are not expected to be completed today.
At this stage of the investigation it appears no one else was involved in the double tragedy that occurred shortly after 5.20pm yesterday, police say.
OCT 3, 6.30pm: Large numbers of police converged on the Auckland Harbour Oaks high-rise apartment block in downtown Auckland this evening as a result of what a senior officer says is “a serious incident.”
The officer told NBR ONLINE there would not be so many police present unless it was “something serious”.
About a dozen marked and unmarked police cars blocked the street as detectives and scene of crime officers made their way to the 26th floor.
Scores of residents were kept out of the building and have only just been allowed to enter, with the exception of the 26th floor, provided they can establish who they are.
One onlooker said an ambulance had been at the scene earlier but this could not be confirmed.
