The Restaurant Association says word of mouth remains the main recommendation in New Zealand for choice of where to dine.

Its annual Hospitality Report has turned to daily deal operator GrabOne to research diner behaviour.

Association chief executive Marisa Bidois says it shows shows just 3% of Kiwis are posting regular restaurant reviews on sites such as Menumania and Menus.co.nz.

“This is particularly insightful, given that more than 46% check reviews online before trying a new restaurant.”

By contrast, 75% of respondents visit a new restaurant based on the recommendation of family or friends.

Ms Bidois says the decision to use GrabOne was based on the opportunity to access a large database.

“GrabOne holds the most subscribers of all the daily deal sites in New Zealand,” she says.

“We are constantly looking to understand dining trends and having access to a large number of individuals to ask pertinent questions to is essential for our businesses to prepare for coming trends.”
