The government has just announced that John Key and Murray McCully will make an “announcement on Queens Wharf and Auckland waterfront” at 4pm on Monday.
Presumably, this will be the final decision on the controversial World Cup “party central” plan and how it involves, or not, the Queens Wharf sheds.
Many would say World Cup minister McCully has made a dog’s breakfast of the party central planning overall.
But Private Bin observes that the timing of this announcement, at least, is masterful.
This Monday is, of course, Labour Day.
Most news organisations will be down to a skeleton staff, and thus more amenable than ever to regurgitating the official line.
And maybe some spoon-fed, whizzy 3D graphics too, displaying rugby tourists standing around with styrofoam beer cups while local restaurant and bar owners fume having an entertaining time in a dynamic environment.
Especially given the nicely timed two-hour lead-in for the TV news - enough time to ensure coverage, but too little for any critical analysis.
Just sayin’.
