ASX-listed Tabcorp could make a play for New Zealand's TAB, the AFR says.

Tabcorp CEO David Attenborough said at the company's annual result that it is looking to expand overseas. Industry sources say it has already run its ruler over our TAB, despite it not being officially up for privatisation.

"Getting hold of that licence could be a relatively low-risk way for Tabcorp to begin its overseas foray," the Aussie paper's Street Talk column says.

Tabcorp declined to comment.

NBR is approaching the TAB and government for comment.

Tabcorp — the equivalent of our TAB in New South Wales and Victoria — was privatised in 1994.

The NZ Racing Board, which runs the TAB as well as two racing television channels, had turnover of $2.1 billion in 2014 and net profit of $137 million.
