At least half of all New Zealand adults are down with online shopping and are mouse-happy with their credit cards when it comes to e-commerce, according to Nielsen statistics.

Daily deal sites, such as GrabOne and TreatMe, plus the introduction of debit cards combined with new technology and social media are contributing to the shift away from retail stores.

Nearly 1.5 million of Kiwis ages 18+ are into online shopping, up 7% year on year.

That figure represents 46% of the adult population, double that of six years ago.

Not only are more people shopping online but we’re also buying more.

Online purchases have increased 25% year on year.

Nielsen associate director of research Tony Boyte said consumers have become more comfortable with the transaction process and outcomes.

Two-thirds of us get daily email alerts from deal websites and 40% have bought from such sites in the past three months.

The rise of social media has influenced the shift, with consumers researching products on the internet and spreading the word online.

The value of purchases made from international websites has risen from 17% to 21% as a proportion of New Zealand online spend.

Mr Boyte said the ability to purchase items not available locally is a driver.

“[This highlights] the opportunities that could be available to New Zealand retailers if they can tap into this market.

“A number of consumers also claim that goods are cheaper to buy on international websites, indicating that the rise in purchasing from such sites could potentially be because of GST increases in New Zealand in October, as smaller purchasers (under $400) from overseas do not incur taxation for bringing them into the country.”
