HTC’s One X, one of a clutch of new smartphones with beefy “quad core” processors and super-size displays that were previewed at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, is heading for our shores.

The One X features a jumbo 4.7-inch display – the same as the HTC XL already sold here by Vodafone.

Engadget says HTC has diluted its brand by creating too many handsets - and its US site does list 51 models (the Taiwanese company also contract manufactures “house brand” Androids for various phone companies, usually at the cheaper end of the market).

But Engadget was impressed by the One X, which it has dubbed HTC’s big comeback hope (see the full Gizmodo review here; HTC tech specs page here).

Telecom will sell the HTC One X will be available at $0 on a 24-month $100 Smartphone plan and a step-down model, the HTC One V, for  $0 on a 24-month $60 Smartphone plan. Off-contract pricing was not immediately available. In the US, it's selling for $US800, indicating an RRP north of $1000 here.

Pre-orders will be live on Telecom’s website from 10 April, with the handsets available online and in store on April 26.

2degrees will also carry the HTC One X.

A spokesman said pricing had yet to be set, but will include a $0 option for those who take a 24-month plan. The handset would be in stores by the end of April.

Vodafone will also stock the One X.

As well as all the usual mod-cons, One X and the One V sport the latest version of Google’s Android software, Version 4.0, a.k.a “Ice Cream Sandwich”.
