2degrees, which on Friday announced it had signed 206,000 customers during its first 180 days, is raising the cost of its sim cards from $2 to $5.
A member of Geekzone spied the change on the telco’s website.
A 2degrees sim card used to cost $2, and came with $2 credit pre-loaded. A new deal is being phased in that sees a sim card cost $5, with $1 credit pre-loaded. A $20 sim card deal (with $20 credit loaded) remains the same.
2degrees waives the $5 sim card fee for those who bring their Telecom or Vodafone number with them to the new telco.
Also spotted was a some fine print that indicated 2degrees was about to double its mobile data price from 50 cents a megabyte to $1 a megabyte - a price mentioned in new terms and conditions due to kick in February 12.
However, a spokeswoman for 2degrees said the mention of $1 a megabyte data was a “typo”, and that there will be no change to data pricing.
On Friday, 2degrees chief executive Eric Hertz described 50 cents per megabyte as appropriate for a casual rate.
Telecom and Vodafone both offer data at 10 cents per megabyte on pre-pay plans.
2degrees will move to a completely different pricing model when it upgrades its network to 3G later this year, Mr Hertz indicated.
