Former MediaWorks journalists and editors Paula Penfold, Eugene Bingham and Toby Longbottom have joined Fairfax Media, starting today.
The award-winning duo of Mr Bingham and Ms Penfold became best known for their work on the shows 3rd Degree, 3D and 3D Investigates.
They were made redundant from MediaWorks in December when the broadcaster cancelled 3D, the final iteration of the current affairs show they worked for. Their editor, Mr Longbottom, also left the company.
Fairfax executive editor Sinead Boucher says the trio’s “flair for hard-hitting investigative journalism and innovative storytelling” will be an asset to the company’s audiences.
Ms Boucher says the team will be encouraged to experiment with “modern formats” on new and existing platforms, adding that they will mostly be working on creating digital and video content.
"The success of projects like Serial and Making a Murderer overseas show that there is a real appetite for investigative journalism presented in new and engaging ways," she tells NBR.
“We know that our audiences have a deep need and appetite for journalism that is thought-provoking, serious and in-depth. They expect us to hold the powerful to account and champion the causes that matter to New Zealanders, and we are committed to doing so."
Ms Penfold says she is “thrilled to be working for a company that recognises the value of investigative journalism” and is willing to fund it.
The trio is arguably most well-known for its investigation into the miscarriage of justice of Teina Pora.
