Rumours surrounding Android’s latest version of the operating system are emerging out of the woodworks, although Google isn’t offering much information about the forthcoming Android 5.0.

Speculation that the latest version of the operating system will be released around early winter have been tossed aside, following hints it’ll be rolled out around springtime after comments from Hiroshi Lockheimer, vice president of engineering for mobile at Google, suggesting to Computerworld at Mobile World Congress that, “the Android release cadence is one major release a year with some maintenance releases that are substantial still”

This would suggest that, seeing as the Android 4.0 operating system was released in November of last year, the latest version of the software would be released around a similar time in 2012.

However, Lockheimer did add during his talk with Computerworld that, “Having said that, we’re flexible. The [timing of releases] is not what drives us, but what does is innovation and offering users a great experience.”

Android’s operating systems have had a history of ‘sweet’ names, with the latest 4.0 version being dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).

Lockheimer closed with word that Google is already receiving confectionary suggestions that start with the letter J.

Will ‘Jelly Pudding’ reflect the future operating system’s increased flexibility?
