Third-year Auckland graphic design and illustration student Kelsen Findlay has been selected to have his work featured as a Beck’s “art label.”

The Beck’s Music Inspires Art campaigns have resulted in some striking and visually exciting beer bottle labels.

The latest features established designers using the music of Auckland band Ghost Wave to design a series of limited edition labels for all Beck’s 330ml bottles.

Mr Kelsen’s mystical depiction of two mountains represents the two worlds of music and art coming together.

“Music helps me get into a place of creativity – music is a bit of a journey and creativity is too,” he says. “The imagination and the journey is the beauty of both art and music.

"I would hope the stuff I make gets people’s imaginations going!”

The Auckland University of Technology student has enjoyed the “real world” experience Beck’s has given him.

“It feels like what I’m doing has some value. It’s real now, rather than being an assignment. It’s encouraging and humbling.”

Mr Kelsen admits the idea of his image being pasted over thousands of Beck’s bottles “feels pretty surreal to be honest” and that the competition has allowed him to make some connections in the design industry.

The winning prize was $2000 cash plus $2000 worth of art supplies, which he hopes will get him to London to complete an internship after he graduates.
