The New Zealand Initiative today announced that Barbara Chapman, chief executive and managing director of ASB Bank, has joined the think tank’s board of directors.
“We are delighted Barbara has agreed to join our board,” said Roger Partridge, The New Zealand Initiative’s chairman. “After seven years leading one of New Zealand’s largest and most respected companies, she brings a wealth of experience about what is needed to build a more prosperous New Zealand for all New Zealanders.”
“Building and sustaining a strong New Zealand is about engaging in conversations about the big things that will make a positive difference to our future,” said Ms Chapman. “The New Zealand Initiative researches and promotes these important conversations, and I’m excited to be able to support them to achieve great outcomes for all New Zealanders.”
Ms Chapman commenced as chief executive and managing director of ASB Bank in April 2011. Since 1994, she has held several diverse senior executive roles with the Commonwealth Bank Group of companies, having started her career with the group as chief manager marketing at ASB.
Ms Chapman is a former chairwoman of Oxfam New Zealand and a former director of Oxfam International. She was also an inaugural trustee of the New Zealand Equal Opportunities Trust and was its chairwoman for several years. She was New Zealand’s inaugural “Marketer of the Year” and has received numerous awards for innovative and effective marketing throughout her career.
