Former Reserve Bank deputy governor Rod Carr is returning to the bank as a director.
Dr Carr filled in as acting governor in the interregnum between Don Brash and Alan Bollard's terms as the bank's governor.
However, Dr Carr's previous history, working on the health reforms of the National government in the 1990s, rendered him persona non grata with the then-Labour government and he was never going to be appointed by an administration headed by Helen Clark.
Instead, he moved on to become chief executive of Jade Corporation and more recently has been vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury. He has also held senior executive positions with the National Australia Bank.
It is not his first appointment with the current government – he has also headed the National Infrastructure Advisory Board.
In announcing the appointment yesterday, Finance Minister Bill English cited Dr Carr's " extensive experience, both in the banking industry and as a director".
