William Rolleston has been elected as Federated Farmers’ 32nd national president in Palmerston North today.
“As vice-president since 2011, I am honoured to be entrusted with a leadership role following in the footsteps of some farming greats,” says Dr Rolleston said in a statement.
Dr Rolleston replaces Bruce Wills and was elected unopposed by the 42-member national council.
“Federated Farmers is New Zealand’s foremost rural advocate with a proud past and strong future,” Dr Rolleston said, who is a former GP and has been chairman of Life Science Network, a pro-genetic modification lobbyist, since 2000.
“Our national council knows that the president must represent the views of all members and Federated Farmers is a broad church. I endorse this principle.”
Wairarapa’s Anders Crofoot takes over as vice-president from Dr Rolleston.
The federation’s newly elected industry group chairmen are Rick Powdrell, from Bay of Plenty for meat and fibre, and Andrew Hoggard from Manawatu-Rangtikei for dairy.
This month also sees a new chief executive for the federation, as Graham Smith takes over from Conor English.
