Foreign Minister Murray McCully has welcomed the renewal of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba after 53 years.
Presidents Barack Obama and Raoul Castro announced the detente this morning after months of secret diplomacy sparked by Pope Francis' visit to Cuba earlier this year.
