The Green Party and non-government organisations will today make a point of personally delivering thousands of submissions against the Government's proposal to allow for mining on schedule four conservation land.
Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei said organisations including "creatively dressed" Forest and Bird supporters would present the submissions to the Ministry of Economic Development, setting out reasons for opposing mining on schedule four land.
Ms Turei said over 35,000 submissions on the schedule four mining stocktake discussion document had already been received by the Government.
She said the public was being increasingly exposed to the facts about mining, and regardless of any potential royalty revenue, jobs, or wealth benefits, the majority still wanted to keep pristine parts of the country protected.
The Government's proposals are to open protected parts of Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel and Paparoa National Park, in the South Island, for prospecting and possibly mining.
