NZ app developers band together for Christchurch
New Zealand application developers will contribute all proceeds from their apps to the Red Cross to support quake victims.
Until March 5, all proceeds from Apple and Mac applications made in New Zealand will go to the Red Cross to help victims of last Tuesday’s earthquake in Christchurch.
Mapping, exercise and gaming applications are just some of those joining the appeal, which has also gained the support of 13 international application developers, ranging from the US and Canada to Germany.
The appeal began on February 28 and includes big name New Zealand app companies such as Majic Jungle Software. Owner and developer David Frampton produced the internationally popular Chopper series of applications, a military game for iPhones and iPads.
Chopper 2 second registered in the top five downloads from Apple iTunes AppStore US iPad download chart last year, and has sold hundreds of thousands of copies.
“The quake has been devastating to New Zealand and we all have friends and family in Christchurch that have been affected,” Mr Frampton said. “We know we can make a difference by banding together with our fellow developers to support the rescue and rebuilding efforts with the best tools we have, our apps.”
Other New Zealand app heavy weights rallying to the cause are Minimonos, an virtual world application for environmentally conscious children. Founded by New Zealander Melissa Clark-Reynolds, the marketing team is based in Christchurch.
“Seeing the mess Christchurch is now in, it's heart-warming to have fellow developers around the country, and even internationally, band together to support the Red Cross relief efforts," said Jonathan Collins of MiniMonos.
