The New Zealand dollar is buying more for travellers in many Eastern Europe destinations and in Vietnam.

Hungary, whose currency, the forint, has fallen more than 12 percent against the NZ dollar in the last twelve months, topped the latest Expedia Foreign Exchange Index survey, developed by the online travel company. Five of the top 10 destinations in the index are in Eastern Europe.

The NZ dollar has also appreciated by 8.06 percent against the euro, making Europe as a whole a value-for-money destination.

Even though the NZ dollar has climbed recently against the United States dollar, the US only ranked 13th on the index.

The Vietnamese dong, also almost 12 percent weaker against the NZ dollar, and the Croatian kuna, 9 percent weaker, were new entrants in the top 10.

Vietnam was second as the best value destination based on how the NZ dollar has performed in the past 12 months and Croatia was third. Denmark was fourth and Latvia fifth.
