There were 35,711 trades during January, down 1.2 percent on last year. The average number of daily trades was 1880.
A total of $86m of new capital was raised during the month, comprising $10m of equity and $76m of debt.
The equity market's capitalisation rose 4.9 percent to $56.7 billion, while the capitalisation of the debt market rose 7 percent to $16.1b.
There were 171 equity securities on NZX markets, down 6.6 percent on last year, and 116 listed debt securities, down 1.7 percent on last year.
The NZX 50 rose 0.9 percent in January and was up 5.5 percent from the same time last year.
The NZX's derivatives market had 40 trades in the month.
