OPEN MIC: After Fletcher, does New Zealand have a corporate leadership problem?

Welcome to NBR's weekly Friday afternoon Open Mic thread!

Yesterday’s abrupt announcement that Fletcher Building’s chief executive, Mark Adamson, was stepping down has reignited concerns about the company’s overall strategy. But perhaps more important is a potential crisis of competency at the top levels of New Zealand industry, with the newest ex-CEO just the tip of an iceberg.

What do you think?

  • Is there a corporate leadership problem in this country after all, or is something else going on?
  • Might one factor be an “old boys'” network, or is that irrelevant in this age?
  • Other countries are in similar leadership doldrums, so maybe it’s just a human problem?
  • What role does a board play in mitigating or dealing with incompetence?

Below are a few related stories to help fill in the blanks:

  1. Fletcher CEO forced out amid second earnings downgrade
  2. EXCLUSIVE: Ex-Fletcher boss' abusive internal email
  3. Fletcher Construction suffers an exodus of employees
  4. Fletcher Building contests characterisation of CEO performance
  5. Shoeshine: Measuring Mark Adamson’s performance at Fletcher Building

If this doesn’t stoke your fire, post about anything else you want, ask random questions, whatever. (There’s always the rancorous workplace gender diversity debate and politicians with questionable welfare histories ...)

Have fun, readers!
