Christchurch residents were woken at 3.32am by a short sharp quake some said was proceeded by a roar "like a freight train".

Christchurch residents were woken at 3.32am by a short sharp quake some said was proceeded by a roar "like a freight train."

A 4.3 magnitude jolt at 3.32am proceeded by a roar "like a freight train."

There were no reports of injury or property damage, and police say there was no spike in emergency calls.

The quake at 3.32am was centred near Cashmere and was at a depth of 5km, GeoNet says.

A number of aftershocks followed.

The largest was a 2.7 magnitude quake at 3.36am. Smaller aftershocks hit at 3.51am and 4.29am.
