The most annoying social media buzzwords

Fri, 15 Jun 2012

I love social media. It helps people in their work, and life, and makes the world a better place.

But the buzz words used by social media experts and hangers on - sweet screaming monkeys, they dive me crazy.

So what are the worst of the worst? The most over-used, meangingless and or annoying words and phrases?

This being a new media blog, I did of course crowdsource this question on Twitter, telling people "I'm going to blog" on the topic.

Some of your suggestions and replies:

  • Curate
  • Social media maven
  • Social media ninja
  • Digital natives
  • Social media influencers
  • Conversation facilitators
  • Folksonomy
  • Deep learnings
  • Authentic engagement
  • "That *stupid* #ttrttpt hashtag" [this tweet relates to the previous tweet - CK]
  • Twacism
  • Crowdsourcing! [Oh very good - CK]
  • "I'm going to blog". The idea that "blog" is a verb is annoying :-) [Ha, at least I don't use emoticons*, buddy - CK]
  • Social graph
  • "We aren't changing our policy on allowing anonymous comments" [Ho ho. Nope - CK]
  • Digital assets
  • Any portmanteau ending in "sphere". Blogosphere, Twittersphere, Tumblrsphere
  • 'Boom' to infer success completion or agreement.
  • Return on engagement
  • Social mediums

Feel free to add your own examples in Comments below.

* I've just had words with @CalebAllison, who said in some cases an emoticon is necessary to convey additional information in the blank world of text. I can see where he's coming from. But if you, say, use a wink ;-) to convey irony, the very use of the emoticon reduces your dry wit into a pool of cheese.
