One of the first known cases to grip the nation was the trial of pirate John Caffrey held in the High Court at Auckland.
Newspapers from the 1800s reported on a “shocking” and “dreadful” murder after Caffrey shot Robert Taylor. Mr Taylor had refused Caffrey the hand of his daughter in marriage.
