Australian tourist Philip McNamara was on a boat off the coast of Papua New Guinea filming Mount Tavurvu when the volcano erupted, the Brisbane Times reports.
The eruption was on August 29, but Mr McNamara's footage (below) only made it to YouTube this weekend.
In the video, Philip can be heard saying "watch out for the shock, it's coming" before a sonic boom hits the boat.
